An Introduction to the Reggio Emilia Approach Online Course

By: Diane Kashin, Ed.D, RECE.

This course serves as an introduction to the approach to early learning emanating from Reggio Emilia, Italy. This innovative approach to early childhood education began shortly after the Second World War. It is based on the theories of social construction and a philosophy that supports an emergent curriculum. The course will provide an overview of the history, theories and foundational principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach, giving students the opportunity to engage in dialogue and to think deeply about their own contexts of teaching and learning. It serves as a starting point to those wishing to learn more about this approach which has inspired so many from across the globe.

The introductory course is the first in a series of five courses available from Dominion Learning Institute of Canada which offers a comprehensive selection of relevant, evidence-based learning opportunities that are both accessible and affordable. You can sign up for individual courses or take advantage of a learning membership plan that will give you more access to more courses as well as opportunities for group memberships.

Dominion Learning Institute of Canada is offering wonderful opportunities for our sector to learn at a pace that suits them and in areas of their interest. Their work is an asset to the early learning sector  ~ Don Giesbrecht, CEO, Canadian Child Care Federation

I am honoured to be your facilitator and guide for this course. It was in the early nineties that I first began to hear about this approach and I have been on a journey to learn more ever since. I urge anyone beginning their journey to go directly to the source via the Reggio Children website to learn from the originators of the approach. The intention with the courses that I am offering is to provide an accessible and affordable opportunity to learn more about the Reggio Emilia Approach from which you will receive professional development credits where appropriate and a certificate of completion. The other four courses will be featured on this blog as they become available. These courses provide you with what I have offered students in the past in the early childhood education courses that I have taught at both the diploma and degree level. The Dominion Learning Institute of Canada recognized that there was an interest in this topic across Canada and beyond. I am honoured to have been asked to create these courses. Learning about the Reggio Emilia Approach can be a transformational experience for those working with our youngest learners.

Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning how to learn ~ Loris Malaguzzi
